“And They Caught Me Off Guard”
So, despite the fervent assurances of true believers in the comments on my posts and Justin’s posts that the Sinclair Lewis quotation was part of a brilliant strategic plan designed to grab free headlines, open the eyes of the American people to the dangers of “Christianism,” and “get props from the Left,” Congressman Paul told Jan Mickelson of WHO Radio in Des Moines that he was caught off guard, and his response was “the first thought that flashed through my mind.”
There’s a lesson here somewhere . . .
The entire interview is well worth listening to, and you can find the audio here. Make sure to listen to the segment after the discussion of the Huckabee ad, where Congressman Paul gives a very good, cogent summary of Christian just-war theory. That’s the candidate that so many of us small-government Christians support.
For a more lighthearted view of this whole kerfuffle, check out this post by my friend and colleague Aaron Wolf at ChroniclesMagazine.org. Make sure to read all the way to the end. You’ll be glad you did.
(Thanks to Sean Scallon and Ravi Kuppusamy for calling my attention to the interview.)

What’s next, 3-D glasses worn at Christian Coalition cinemas in Aw Shucks, Idaho and like places that enable the faithful to see the cross leap out toward one? Or maybe those buttons we used to see which, when viewed from different angles, appeared to move? Wow, Mom, watch President Bush open his arms toward me. Watch, Mom, watch! He does love me, doesn’t he, huh? Remember those crucifixes depicting the Corpus wearing a money pouch? Now the Savior can sport an Uzi on his hip, thus signifying His imprimatur of just war AND the Zionist State. And finally, Pat Robertson will reveal how Jesus came to him in a dream and told him that only those who voted Republican would be saved. You laugh? I bet they’re thinking about it now.

A third column on this are you excessive.I said this was an off the cuff remark, but it was brilliant.Huckabee has been defending the add all day and the more he’s on TV the better it is for those who want to bring him down. He was made a laughing stock on Drudge with the floating cross and Joe Scarborough gave him a good razing this morning. He’s been using his religion all through the campaign.

As I said, Paul’ style works for him. He gets it both ways.
We are glad you aren’t offended anymore. Wait, that isn’t what your post was about was it?

It was a dumb remark. It came off as anti-Christian, which pleases the Ayn Randers no end, but makes everyone else nervous, as well it should.
I personally am a Carlist who believes that separation of church and state is Marxist idiocy and a prescription for social chaos, but I realize this was little more than a dumb gaffe by a man who is more blunt than polished. Let’s hope it doesn’t prove to be a “Dean Scream”.

No, it never was. As I’ve said, it didn’t offend me; as a supporter of Ron Paul, I just thought it wasn’t wise, considering that he needs the votes of small-government Christians if he’s going to go anywhere.

Jack, what separates you from the leftist Christian bashers? It is not certain that the “cross” was intentional. If this was any other subject, the same people would be screaming conspiracy theory. And so what if it was intentional. Better a little Christian identity politics than a neutered self-loathing Christianity.

Yikes, “caught off guard”! That wasn’t exactly a curve ball they threw at him. And the fact that the “first thought” was a shabby cliche (wrongly attributed to Sinclair Lewis) isn’t too reassuring either, especially with Russert coming up. Paul’s poll numbers have to catch up to his fund-raising success(C Bowen is busy vetting the donor list) before a gaffe like this becomes a “Dean Scream” moment. Bet on Huckleberry springing it on him down the road.

Baloney, leftist Christ haters.Huckabee is denying it was a Cross. You boys see nothing wrong with Huckabee using the Cross to peddle his wares. He even has stated per an article in the Jewish Russian Times which is avaible at Free Republic under Mike Huckabee, that all the
Palistinains should be forced from Israel all of them. You are defending a guy who will use anything to get elected.I loved the quote when I first saw it and stll do.It applies to Mike Huckabee who is no real Christian. They loved his idea to drive out the Palistinians at Free Republic.

Carlist, go put your red pants on and refight the Spanish Civil War.If you think that was not designed to be a cross and posed that way with the light shinning on it,you need to have your head examined. The only thing huck has going for himself is a lot of prowar so called Christian megachurh pastors who want to bring on the final days. He even has Tim Lehaye working for him out in iowa.

I personally don’t believe it is meant to be anything other than a cross, and like I have said it should be a manger scene. This is Christmas we are talking about not Easter. If it’s a shelf then doesn’t anyone else find it odd that the guy has huge shelves with nothing on them? The man is obviously no lover of books to have tha much empty shelf space. What I read that really disturbed me today is that he , Huckabee that is, presured the police in Arkansas to let his son off easy on charges of torturing and then hanging a stray dog at a boy scout camp. Can anyone else coroborate this story? I mean they put Michael Vick in prison for this kind of thing.

Huckabee is at present locked in a death grip with Romney, which is a beautiful thing to see. He won’t counter Paul’s remark much because that would mean he’s battling the “second tier” and he wasn’t to be seen as one of the media’s big boys, i.e. on par with Romney.
Huck is/was a flash in the pan and any remark, unwise or not, against such a charlatan will be forgotten in a week.

Ok, here is hopefully a link to at least one story on the dog situation. All I can say is wow. I can’t wait to spend Christmas with this crew.

@Red Phillips
You point to a serious blind spot among conservatives,
the tolerance of anti-Christian sentiments by their
fellow travelers.
I mean, we spent hours decrying Hitches, Dawkins, movies
like the “Golden Compass”, from cultural leftists, but
we tolerate the same from those who are equally anti-
christian, equally committed to cultural libertinism,
but unlike leftists worship the entity called the “free
market”.
It is troubling by what it says about our priorities,
and explains why in name of the culture war we keep
electing people like George W. Bush who then does a
bait and switch on us. If we are deceived, it is because
we want to be deceived.

Mr.Richert;
Again, I cringe when Paul tries to maintain some degree of respect to the Alex Jones community or when he commented on the case of the Browns.
Both sound bites earned him gocha journalism hit pieces but he has a way of weathering it with a deeper explanation.
I think it points to a grasp of the new media and one’s ability to use a hostile MSM with some faith that he’ll be able to clarify his message within 24 hours and have it disseminated.
Using Mr.Buchanan’s command-and-control campaigns of ‘92 and ‘96, where he had to dump Larry Pratt and anyone who associated with David Duke at any level no matter how talented and honest, Paul has faith in his political instincts.
I cringed when he fell for the bait by the Fox News folks; Red did give the correct response, but Paul doesn’t fall for the “I must apologize” route, he just further explains.
Mr. Raimondo was correct to work with the useful parts of the hit, while Mr.Wolf found a way to make light of it, entirely decentralized.
And meanwhile, Paul gets it both ways.
The folks you refer to who might have been “offended” from what they saw on Fox N Friends (I have doubts they watch youtube) are probably still grappling with the news they heard on the radio or tele on how Dr.Paul wants to legalize drugs and prostitution (insert eyes rolling emotocon.)
The War is the Only Issue with these folks and they have to decide to stand with the Prince of Peace or the King of Lies.

Scott,
Apparently Huckabee fired the prosecutor who was investigating a case of animal cruelty against his son. The guy may not be fascist but make no mistake he is evil.

The only part of the comment on fascism I disagree with is the “When it comes...” part. Compare “our” 1968 gun control act with the Nazi law of 1938...maybe it was ‘36 and you will find that they are virtually the same document. If the fascist follies are not your cup of tea, try the communist waltz. Study the Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto and you will find “we” have enacted and live by more of them than Stalin himself. The vast majority of the American public would not know Liberty or Freedom if they walked up and punched them on the nose!

Scott,
I didn’t mean to suggest that you had made that mistake and your support of Ron Paul is well known. Do you think the msm would be giving Ron Paul a pass on a story like this dog thing? They would use it to submarine his campaign now. I could see it coming up for Huckabee later on.

well, it’s one good thing about being militantly ignored by the media, you can say absolutely whatever you want.

The King of Lies rules most political discourse. Hollow slogans, worn-out pejoratives, reckless accusations and the ludicrous, if not blasphemous claim; “my candidate ____________ (fill in blank)is the TRUE follower of the Prince of Peace”. It’s been said the politics is simply the organizing of hatreds towards a common purpose. The threads on this subject probably do more to support, than contradict that cynical view.
