Getting Comfortable With Rudy, Part II

Posted by Scott P. Richert on November 07, 2007

I interrupt my friendly criticism of Mr. LaTulippe’s article to bring you the breaking news:

Pat Robertson Backs Giuliani’s Bid

Robertson’s remarks on why he would be willing to endorse a man who stands for everything Robertson claims to stand against are revealing:

Robertson said he was willing to overlook Giulani’s pro-abortion rights stance because he takes him at his word that he will appoint “strict constructionist” judges to the Supreme Court and federal bench –- a widely accepted term for judges likely to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights ruling.

This just confirms what I wrote a couple weeks ago, when Sam Brownback met with Giuliani and signaled that he might endorse him: “Giuliani and his handlers are very serious about courting those voters.” It’s also worth noting this, which was stuck in the penultimate paragraph of the AP report on Robertson’s endorsement:

Also Wednesday, Giuliani said he asked two GOP friends in Congress, Rep. Peter King of New York and Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, to introduce bills to keep states from giving licenses or similar identification to illegal immigrants.

That initially seems an odd thing to do, especially considering Rudy’s friendliness to immigrants, and the potential for having his interference in the affairs of Congress backfire on him.  But the AP goes on to note:

The Democratic front-runner, Hillary Clinton, was criticized after a televised debate last week when she hedged an answer on whether she supported New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s effort to grant licenses to illegal immigrants. Her aides say she generally supports the idea in the absence of comprehensive immigration reform.

And there we have it.  Giuliani’s not only fighting to win; he’s acting as if he’s already got the nomination, and he’s going up against Hillary.

Don’t be surprised when more spineless Christian pro-lifers find that kind of self-assurance attractive.

If Giuliani becomes the GOP nominee, the notion that the GOP is in any way a socially conservative party becomes laughable.  Robertson apparently has no difficulty with such an outcome, probably because Robertson’s opposition to abortion and gay rights has been no more serious or principled than has the GOP’s.

It is no surprise that an anti-Christian like
Pat Robertson would support an anti-Christian like
Rudolph Giuliani.

The only way the largely irrelevant Robertson could have another “hey look at me moment” was to do this. Meanwhile, Brownback, another general without an army, just endorsed McCain.

Things are falling in place for a good third party run by Ron Paul.

His “strict constructionist” bullshit would make Bubba Clinton blush. Rudolfo has strongly hinted ("It would be OK if a strict constructionist judge found it {Roe} settled law") that he thinks abortion on demand is as set in stone as vanquishment of substantive due process. By his lights, a “strict constructinist” judge will vote to uphold Roe. “Strict Constructionist”, as with the verb “is”, is subject to the meaning of whatever Humpty Dumpty seeking to acquire or hold power assigtns.

At least Liberia Pat and the other hucksters will be exposed for the the dumbasses and /or liars they are when Rudolfo gets to his balcony and slaps them down as he did his first two wives with “I didn’t lie to you...”. I wonder if the sheep in the 700 flock will finally turn their collective noses up at the Kool Aid then?

In Waugh’s Men at War Guy Crouchback learns of the
Nazi-Soviet pact and proclaims at least now it is the
world against modernity, or somthing like that.

Now that an influential “Christian Right” leader and
Guilani have made a pact the battle lines should be
visible even to the blind.

They are really getting desperate.First Dobson rejects Romney,Frudy and Thompson, Ron Paul gets a huge fundraising boost,Weyrich endorses Romney and Robertson endorses somebody like Frudy. The neocon gang is pulling out Robertson early, he wasn’t supposed to come out for another couple of months.

Robertson likely has reasons for this, including that other Christian right figures that he doesn’t get along with have either endorsed Romney (who appears to be the country club candidate) and he doesn’t want to endorse Huckabee for reasons of jealousy.

Note also that Robertson has been an extreme believer in the Israel-centric ideology, and there is no better candidate for putting Israel first than Rudy.

BTW, Brownback has endorsed McCain.

Frudy is the Israeli and country club and military industrial candidate, they love abortion at the country club.Romney is country club, mormon, and main street candidate and Israeli ass kisser.Guiliani is totally owned by Israel. At least flipper Romey pretends to have some conservative ideals and has only been married once.

It would appear that Romeny is the country club choice, but the country club crowd isn’t as powerful as it once was.  I’m not sure that Romeny really believes in the Neocon agenda, or much of anything.  My guess is that Romeny will play along with the Neocons until he either loses or gets elected.  The problem is that as Bush Jr. has shown, unless one has strong convictions, the Neocons will fill the vacum of a mind not made up on policy issues.

I see Kevin already had the news on Brownback and Rudy.  Note also that Robertson endorsing Rudy is a small payback for McCain’s attack on Robertson and Falwell back in 2000.

Soc&Paleocons;shouldn’t be suprised.
Robertson (and snakelike Ralph Reed) sandbagged a then viable Pat
Buchanan in South Caroinal in ‘96.

Of course, their candidate Bob Dole
pledged eternal fidelity to the Pro-life cause.

Come the convention and the nominee tells the press he hadn’t read the Pro-life plank and didn’t intend to.

So much then for GOP establishment committment to “Permanent Things” and if anything, more so now.

But I guess these are the prices one to pays to maintain an aura of “influence”
and more to the point, keep lucrative cable positions intact!

Tom Buggeln is absolutely correct about the role Robertson played in ‘96.  Perfidy by Robertson is nothing new.

here is another example as to why Christians who wish
to enter the public arena should be wary of getting too
close to candidates in the naive expectation that they
can influence them.

Face it, politicians are better at manipulating people
than the rest of us, and if we forget it we get stung,
over and over.

At this stage, if he is sincere, Pat should have known
better.  But I doubt that by now he is sincere. He has
made too many compromises, and even worse, has built
himself an empire with too many worldly goods attached.

So…
