Here’s to Charlie
Posted by Taki Theodoracopulos on September 01, 2008
I just read about Charlie Reese’s retirement. His dignity and grace in his ultimate column is untypical of his profession today. Only two months ago the nation took time out to mourn the death of a courtier to the powerful, and what a time out it was. Three days of crocodile tears by smiling wallet lifters and bald-faced phonies whose absence on earth would not have been keenly felt even by their immediate family--the neocons. Glory to you, Charley Reese, and the great ones like H. L. Mencken are nodding in agreement in that great newsroom up above. Let this be a lesson on how a gentleman writer goes out.

Well put. But somewhere in the fog of my mind I recall Charley “retiring” before and he came back for more. One can hope he’ll do the same…

This one hurts. I found Charley years ago through the miracle of the internet, and have bookmarked him ever since. A true independent and never afraid to speak his mind whatever the political conventions of the day were.
Here’s to you, Mr. Reese, on a well earned retirement.

I saw his columns in Middle American News a few years ago and have read his work since. One of the few who wrote with a lot of common sense. He will be missed. Good luck and Godspeed Charley.

Charley retired from the Orlando sentinel years ago but continued to write syndicated columns published on the internet. Since his “first retirement”, there’s nothing worth reading in the sentinel.
