Joerg Haider suffered from the same egocentricism of Jean-Marie Le Pen and Geert Wilders which has hindered their political development as well. That being said, Haider was still a brave man who did a lot of good for his country and the patriotic movement. He will be missed. RIP.

Haider wasn`t an opportunist that never formulated one thought of his own. Everything he ever said or done was in order to get spotlight and win votes. He didn`t hold one position that was truly his own.

That being said was he did was harmful and despicable enough. The so called “provocations of the Slovene ethnic minority” were far more than that. He was one more chauvinist German in a long line of chauvinist Germans stomping on the Carinthian Slovenes undermining their cultural autonomy and attempts to preserve their seperate ethnic identity, wishing to have them culturaly assimilated into Germans.

And let me remind you there the Carinthian Slovenes are not some immigrants that migrated into German lands. It is their land where they have always lived. The land which would have been made a part of Slovenia (Yugoslavia) following WWII - which the Carinthian Slovenes undobtoudley deserved after going through the repression of the interwar fascist Austria and of the 3rs Reich - had not the Allies decided it was geopolicaly advantagous to pretend Austria was a victim of Hitler, although in fact Austrians had welcomed unification with Hitler`s Germany.

Here is to hoping Austrian chauvinists never have their way and Carinthian Slovenes always remain Slovenes. Albeit at times it seems it is a losing battle as every generation their numbers dwindle for the most part due to assimilation.

PS, it is disquieting to hear supposed conservatives asserting having something positive to say about the Waffen-SS is a redeming quality.

142 kph is equivalent to 88 mph, just cruisin’ speed here in the Lone Star State. Don’t know the contur of the road of course.

If the posted speed was 70 kilometers per hour, then we are talking about roughly a 40 mph zone.  At about 150 kilometers per hour, or about 90 mph, only a very good handling car or a race quality driver is likely to keep the car on the road consistently.  A Phaeton is a good vehicle, but is not for sports/race like handling.

Nevertheless, give me 1000 Jorg Haider’s over a single Ralph Nader, who will live safely forever and not enjoy a single moment of it.

What effect does this have on Austrian nationalist politics?  My understanding is that there are two “far-right” parties at odds with one another over personal disputes.  Will his death make it easier or more difficult for these parties to unite, or will there be no effect?

Of course, the speed estimations by the witnesses could be inflated and maybe Jorg was forced off the road by someone who would then be a convenient false witness.

Haider’s virulent opposition to Social Catholic economics, to moral and social conservatism, and to the specifically Catholic basis (mine, but by no means the only one, though, I submit, the most comprehensive and coherent) for holding such views, made him the voice of Austria’s German-nationalist third lager, of which Haider was not the most famous son.

It even appeals to much the same sort of people sociologically. Well, of course it does. Indeed, in his heyday, Haider himself said that there was no other party in Europe with which his had more in common than New Labour. And he was right. He was simply stating a fact there.

Haider almost died in a car crash twenty years ago, and was a chronic speeder. Good thing the Governor is rarely ticketed, anywhere.

He lost control of his vehicle (the abominable and only-in-this-case appropriately-named Phaeton) at over 140 kph in a 70kph zone moving towards the edge of a built-up area. One of the pieces of road furniture his car ploughed through was the 50kph limit sign for that village. Assassination, no matter how badly many here would like for “the Jews” to be culpable, is highly unlikely.

Haider said a lot of provocative things in the past, but had mellowed noticeably over the past few years. He was afflicted by the populist’s taste for profligacy, doubling Carinthia’s public debt during his second period as governor. Instead of actually getting things done when he had executive power, he expended vast amounts of energy on straw-man battles to keep the Slovene minority down. (To be fair, “executive power” at the provincial level in Austria doesn’t reach far)

A central problem of Austrian politics is the hardened divide between the two main forces “right of the centre”. For reasons rooted in history, the rising cadres of the nationalist and Christian camps are taught to hate each other - this takes place in the two streams’ affiliated high school and university fraternities, which tend to spend more time and energy distancing themselves from each other than working against the prevailing socialistic mainstream in higher education. It’s maddening and sad to observe when visiting Austrian university towns - otherwise bright and earnest young men locked in a form of low-intensity Kulturkampf, the most recent main events of which took place in the 1930s.

Anyone who seriously studies history with an eye toward discerning Providence must come to the conclusion that God has assigned European Man the special task of being guardian of His Gospel and His Church.

But what is European Man then? 

What special attributes make him worthy?  What unique confluence of the material and the physical make European Man especially capable in fulfilling his duty?

And, if European Man’s material/genetic being is liquidated what becomes of the Church?

The Church, stripped of its historical, euro-centric way of being will no longer be itself.  It will, in effect, be dead.

So too European Man if he mongrelized.

The confluence of spiritual and the material is something I should think Catholics would take seriously (Communion).

Sadly, I suspect the Church hierarchy is corrupt, having forgotten their European selves, their duty to their European brothers (their blood-kin), and beyond reform.

Great post Captainchaos! As a regular visitor to this wonderful site, I must say it has been a pleasure reading your comments that are so straight and to the point. Until the White American Man recognises and acknowledges the role of the very powerful negative forces in this country everything else is simple intellectual masturbation. I’ve always likened it to mainstream liberals who absolutely refuse to believe in any racial differences among groups banging their heads against the wall as to why blacks and mestizos simply can’t keep up despite all the money and extra attention. If the interlopers, traitors and oppurtunists were cast out and sufficiently dealt with all the other problems would be squared away almost effortlessly. I just find it so frustrating that otherwise intelligent people are unable to admit the glaring obviousness of it all. Between 9-11, the recent wars and the recent fleecing it it’s as though they’re not even trying to be discreet anymore. Shocking!

Ultimately, both the left and the right in this country are materialist.  As Omaha John points out, the left thinks “if we just give them the same opportunities they’ll turn out the same as us.” And the right says “we believe in a colorblind society determined by merit” - this is just an apology for multiculturalism anwyay, as unfixed results continue to favor whites - biology is irrefutable.

I traveled the route of the accident just last July and even if the posted speed limit is 70 kmh, in most places I did go 140kmh with my rental Mercedes and I certainly don’t think of myself as an unsafe driver. What is astounding are the parallels between Haider and Juergen Moellemann, a friend of mine in the early 1970’s. Both successful and charismatic politicians at the zenith of their careers, they dared to publicly advocate the Arab side in the Middle East issue. Moellemann died in a highly questionable “suicide” in 2003 after openly siding with the Palestinian and Arab side, now Haider meets a similar fate in an “accident”. How convenient!
