Ron Paul on Jay Leno

Posted by Justin Raimondo on October 31, 2007

I have to say that watching Ron Paul on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno was one of those surreal occurences, like an out-of-body experience, that leave one wondering: Did that really happen? Well, yes, it did: that was What’s-His-Name of the Sex Pistols calling out “Hello, Mr. Paul!” in between the snarling refrain of ”Anarchy in the UK.” Ron Paul meeting the Sex Pistols is like matter meeting anti-matter, and yet one called out to the other, and, instead of an explosion of cosmic proportions, there was ... harmonic convergence.

Jay Leno‘s interview was pretty telling: Leno is Everyman, and his bafflement—you mean, get rid of the IRS?—and yet willingness to give Paul the benefit of a doubt reflects what the campaign is up against. I note that, after an extended discussion of economics, Leno got into the Iraq question, and noted that this is what got him interested in the Paul campaign.

It’s great that there’s one candidate out there who is talking about the consequences of having an empire—Paul uses that word—an American Empire that is costing us trillions that could be spent here at home. Instead, we are throwing our wealth—and the lives of our children—down a neo-colonialist rat hole.

Today Leno, tomorrow New Hampshire.

The Sex Pistols recorded their “Never Mind The Bullocks” album at the same time and in the same studio as Queen’s “A Night At The Opera”. Johnny Rotten and Freddie Mercury chatted and exchanged pleasantries. The probably had tea as well.

The author is confusing the stage persona of Mr Rotten with the private persona of Mr Lydon. Many or most artists don’t live up to what they preach. Just like our commie friends.

I am sure that Ron Paul’s appearance on Jay Leno’s show gave him a bigger boost that all the advertising his - still comparatively small - budget will allow. How do we get him now on Oprah?

that was a great interview.  can’t ask for more than that.

Justin, I couldn’t agree more. Last night was one of thoughts times that the planets lined up. Two of the biggest Anti-Establishment men on the same stage, and shaking hands.

WOW..."Cause I,wanna be. ANARCHY !!!!”

Curious line-up: Cruise, Ron Paul and the Pistols.
Ron was the entire show. The other two acts were
flops. Cruise looked like he just fell out of bed
and the Pistols still cannot carry a tune.

Funny that Tom Cruise was on the program.

Someone earlier mentioned what it would take to get
Ron Paul on Oprah, and I thought to myself: get him
connected to the Scientology weirdoes, a la Tom Cruise.

Not that Dr Paul should convert to Scientology, but
a good, old-fashioned opportunist would have taken
the time to “get in” with Tom Cruise in order to get
an invite to be on Oprah Winfrey’s popular television
program.  Hey, when you’re running for public office
you can’t say “no” to being in the popular media, even
if the people hosting you are rather weird, like Oprah
and Tom Cruise.

Also, from my (somewhat limited) understanding of
Scientology, they would seem to support most libertarian
priciples, correct?

Here is a pretty good report from Lew Rockwell about the happenings pre and post event.

Johnny Rotten apparantly used the term “President Paul”.

I put the complaint here because I do not know
where else to put it.

The Blog page is f***d up.

1) there are posts missing, severeal by Mr. Raimondo
and one by Mr. Gottfried.

2) the link to the comments of the Patrick Foy article
leads into the comments of one of Mr. Raimondo’s articles.

Please get it fixed.

I heard a satellite radio interview with John Lydon
a few years ago in which he stated that he thought the
libertarians had the most interesting views in U.S.
politics. His follow-up comment was that you should be
allowed to smoke all you want, just don’t ask anyone
else to pay your medical bills.
The Sex Pistols were good, but the Ramones were (and
always will be) the best.

Be he in Heaven, be he in Purgatory, Frank Meyer must be smiling. A sort of post Cold War fusionism of Austrian Economics, Burke, Jefferson, and Texas Church of Christ is found in the wise Ron Paul. It is a fusionism that also excludes because Ayn on one side and on another certain others are not invited to the dance.

I’d like to congratulate Jay Leno for a fair and balanced interview of Dr Paul.  It was nice that as the interview went on, the applause became louder. Please donate to the Ron Paul campaign.

What a great interview! And a great interviewer! Jay always makes his guests feel comfortable and look good and has fun doing it. That guest shot was worth a million bucks or more.
Warning to Ron Paul - avoid Letterman like the plague - his only objective seems to be to ridicule his guest for the pleasure of his audience. Plus he’s never made me even smile once. I watch him once a month just to see if things have changed. They never do.

I can’t believe I missed the Sex Pistols and Ron Paul on the same show.  Oh that is huge that Johnny Rotten recognized Ron’s greatness.  I have been wearing my Ron Paul pin at work and everywhere else.  The good news is we are everywhere.  I had a young waitress at a restaurant ask me if I was coming from a Ron Paul rally.  This young girl knew who Ron Paul is.  Then a woman at my work while on hte elevator tells me hat her son is a big fan of Ron Paul the only other person on the elevator who is a clerk in his twenties told me he knows someone working for Ron’s cmpaign.  I live in New York!!!  The home of Rudilhary Giullinton, but you would think that Ron Paul was our representative.  In many ways he is. I am giving Ron every spare cent and now hopelessly addicted to his store.  I ordered 100 of the pins today.  I plan to put a body under every one of those pins that can spread his message.  If anyone happened to see him on C-span 2 the other night he was the one who left jingoism and nonsense about Islamofacism out of his speech.  He is the only wone who remotely respects the intelligence of his audience.  The rest of them come off like car salesman.

I’m a big RP supporter but I wish he’d make it clearer that he’s not in favor of abolishing ALL taxes, just the IRS. When he says “dismantle the IRS” it just makes him sound loony, like we’ll have no tax revenue ever again for roads, bridges, police, etc.

That’s cool that Ron Paul was on Leno, but sorry guys, random nobody Mike Boyer says that Ron Paul’s 15 minutes are up because he isn’t a saber rattling warmonger.  We’d better listen to him since he has a fancy blog on http://www.ForeignPolicy.com....

Not the first time we had a harmonic convergence with John Lydon. He came to the Reform Party convention for the Buchanan campaign, covering it for his show on Vh1 ( one of the few “journalists” who did). I saw him in the Lobby interviewing some little old lady about her views on the UN ( he was very polite and engaging ) Later, when peole people began to realize there was a celebraty in the house, he happily posed for pictures with some of the delagates. I tried to wrangal an iterview for him with Pat - but made the mistake of intrucing him as Johny Rotton. They must have thought it was some kind of dirty trick - at that time, we had the Fulani-ittes to contend with. The interview never happened, perhaps for the best. Johny will be forever confusing with Sid Vicous ( Scott McClellan’s first words to him were - “But I thought you were dead.”
John wrote a great book about his adventures with Sex Pistols and beyond - No Blacks No Dogs No Irish. He recently told Rolling Stone’s “Hall of Fame” what they could do with their award.

Johny’s a true revolutionary who was banned by the establishment just like we are. In the immortal words of the original punks - The Ramones - “Gabba Gabba Hay We Accept You! One of Us One of Us!”.

Sex Pistols, Jay Leno and Ron Paul?--it makes perfect sense when you realize that Ron Paul embodies the zeitgeist of the generation that grew up with the Internet (the i-generation if you will). The political and media establishment is just beginning to catch on to this, but the younger set is more socially and economically conservative than their parent’s generation, but, at the same time, they hate war and love liberty. In short, we are seeing the beginnings of a paleolibertarian revolution that will transform the Republican Party and the good old USA for the forseeable future.
