Shallow Walters

Posted by Taki Theodoracopulos on May 09, 2008

It is indicative of the disastrous social trends that began in the 1960s, that we are now faced with the most odious kind of snobbery, that of celebrity, namely that of Barbara Walters and her memoirs. The fact that someone taught her to act--her mother or her public school teacher--constitutes child abuse to the nth degree. This Walters woman is the greatest antidote to viagra known to man. Her toe-curling schmaltzy observations about the famous people she has come into contact with are as appealing as finding one’s self in Miami Beach in the month of February. A toady to superiors and a tyrant to everyone under her, Baba Wawa is the high priestess of solipsism. The fact that she reveals her affair with an ex-senator, a dignified 88 year-old African-American who is now married, tells it all. She has no shame, and is only out for fame. There is a coy prurience about Walters, a blend of boastful assertions and contrived self-abasement. She was shacked up with my oldest friend, name withheld, back in 1955, in Miami Beach. He is a very rich man but unknown. For some strange reason she failed to mention him, which is lucky for him but indicative of her quest for fame and celebrity. As far as I’m concerned, she does not have enough style to resonate in one’s memory two minutes after she leaves a room, but I am in the minority. Shame to America and the networks and the book world in making such a fuss about a shallow opus written by the shallowest of women.

I will never comprehend that banal twat’s ascendancy in the media.  Apparently, though, even an ilustrious television “career” is not enough for her attention-whoring, she has to write a “tell-all” memoir.  What a pathetic old soup chicken.

Baba Wawa certainly is one of the most shallow persons in the media, only out to advance her self-perceived importance without respect and consideration for her fellow men an women. However, to call her the “High priestess of solipism” is an insult to that philosophical approach. At best she could be defined as the “Nightmare factor in a solopists world view”.

Would it be safe to safe to when you take office that this bitch goes to the top of the list for ostrakismos.

I reckon it’s time to give this dirty, old yenta a blue rinse and a room with a view in a nursing home.

How dare Taki proffer that Barbara Walters is the high priestess of solipsism.  Hillary is willing to fight to the death for that honor.

Let’s be honest.  Most women are shallow.  Look around at any airport waiting area.  Men are reading Time, the Wall Street Journal, perhaps the duller are perusing Sports Illustrated.  Even Maxim has its witty charms, like the Playboys of the early 1960s.

Women are almost all reading Glamour, People, Cosmopolitan, and, the worst of all, Us Weekly.  It’s all about the ephemeral:  looking slutty, the ups and downs of celebrities, and the occasional tabloid story.  Nary an abstract thought, serious piece of writing, call to virtue, or matter of concern outside the SELF among the lot of them.

Women, even shallow women, are made noble by being mothers.  This turns their concerns into someone other than themselves, their possessions, and the illusions of materialism and celebrity.  But fewer women are having kids, and celebrity, materialism, envy, and the impulse to acquisitiveness is at an all time high, fomented by a thorughly execrable media.

Barbara’s thoroughly ordinary and uninteresting, the way any divorced woman with a penchant for home-wrtecking is after her beauty and youth are gone.

As an intelligent non-mother, I protest to the last post. Seriously, Mr. Roach - are you just trying to stir up a s**t storm just for some female attention?  I’m pretty sure you’re going to have Adriana on your ass in a matter of minutes.  At any rate, you are making Jerome and the Old Patristic crowd proud, wherever they are. Congratulations! You are staying true to your Medieval form.  I cannot say the same; however, for the likes of Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, (Doctors of the Church and also non-mothers, thank you very much).

Bringing it up to date - I among thousands of other women, did not spend tens of thousands on a philosophy degree, seek out (what I hoped to be)intelligent political-philosophical conversation - waste hours listening to you good ol’boys on this website just to be insulted with snide references to trash-mags.

To Marie Claire’s Sister.

God did not give you a vagina so you could sit around and philosophize.  Pleeeease.  The women of my generation need to start having children and stop obsessing over “Sex In the City”, pointy dress shoes, and orgasms.  We need to create a future for this nation as our anscestors did for us.  Hence your existence.
The men of my generation want children.  We want a wife who actually wants children, not because they are great “accessories”, but because they want to create a FAMILY.  Instead all I see are women who take their cues from Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.  They will only have children when their role models do it first...so they can be like them.

I fear that Pat Buchanan’s predictions shall come true, and it shall be women who are to blame for it.

“Women to blame for it”?!  Isn’t this just another version of the insufferable victim-talk which we paleos usually accuse leftists of promulgating?  Sorry Tom, but there are scads of men today who are quite happy to eschew the roles of husband and father, without feminist prompting. How many male celebrities out there in the sports or entertainment worlds truly seek these roles?  Or are they just victims of radical feminism?  There’s plenty of responsibility to go round on all sides.

I am a conservative on gender matters, but some of these posts, if they’re not satire, are just over the top.  Bless any woman with the intellectual and moral capability not to be a liberal, and don’t listen to what anybody else says.

There are smart, non-shallow women.  There are shallow, boring, self-absorbed men.  But my point had to do with trends, averages, etc.  The conservative imperative is to speak the truth, even when our ears are filled with the wax of thousands of little lies, myths, and comforting stupidities of our age.

Incidentally, “At any rate, you are making Jerome and the Old Patristic crowd proud, wherever they are. Congratulations! You are staying true to your Medieval form.” To my ears this sounds more like sycophancy rather than a criticism.

Certainly a gross distortion of the Church Fathers and the Medieval Doctors and saints of the Church. One wonders whether the attention paid to St. Teresa and St. Therese is just lip service, since all are members of the same Church and saints.

To PB:  I think one can pick and choose whom one favours among the communion of saints without being accused of paying mere “lip service.” If you are such an adept you should know that not all teaching is ex cathedra or even dogma - including some of the more outrageous and quite frankly, inexcusable sayings of Jerome et al. (Woman as “gateway to Hell” ring any bells?  The feminine protest movement did not come out of thin air, you know).

@ Tom: You are disgusting and beneath contempt. That is all I’m going to say to you -if I add anything else you might embarrass yourself. Down, boy.

@ Mr. Roach.  Thank you for the qualification of your earlier boyish excess.

Woman as “gateway to Hell” ring any bells?

Tertullian? Note that he is not a saint and became a heretic.

At any rate, you are making Jerome and the Old Patristic crowd proud, wherever they are.

wrt to the saints them, they are in heaven. If you are Catholic, does this fact offend you? Despite whatever errors they may have held or their intemperate speech, they abounded in charity. Can you say the same of yourself, when you denigrate them so and cast them in ridicule?

The feminine protest movement did not come out of thin air

Of course not; it came from the father of lies, and was not a reaction to Christianity, but a reaction to a rebellion against Christianity, at the same time adopting some of the same assumptions of that rebellion.

Great post Taki.

Is there anything more indicative of America’s decline than Barbara WaWa? That she isn’t run off TV, shows the deep abiding vulgarity of the American people.

Before this website I thought I had a lot in common with paleo-conservatives, but the more I read the greater I see the divide.

My apologies to Marie Claire’s sister for some of the most ridiculous of remarks.

Barbara Walters and Hillary have to be the women that men hate the most. I can’t watch either for more than 10 seconds, without switching the channel. I had to watch Hillary giving a speech, while I was on a treadmill at the health club. What a nightmare, if she is ever elected president.

Women cease to be Women only when Men cease to be Men.

Jack: Your list is much too short:  Oprah, Madonna and Dr. Susan Strassbag among many others such as Barbara Striesand, etc., etc.  Hillary actually is a parody of a strong woman who needs old horny Bill to really pump up her female supporters.  I really think women should try to be true to their natures.

Patrick: Good additions, how about Ellen Degeneres, Rosanna Barr, Rosie O’Donnell, Barbara Boxer ,and all Democrat women politicians, as well as most Republicans.

What’s more digusting is that Barbara doesn’t stop her tell all with the Senator.

She reveals dating Alan Greenspan and former Fed Chairman Alan “Ace” Greenberg at the same time. Apparently, according to Walters, her maids were confused when Greenspan and Greenberg would simply leave the message “Alan called”. But which one?

Roach:  I want to go through your writings with a red pen.  If you’re so brainy, how come you can’t punctuate or write grammatically?  Honestly, Taki usually manages and he’s foreign.

One of her best friends was Roy Cohn, isn’t that enough!

Wow Taki writes about Barbara Walters and we now have the battle of the sexes going on in here. There is plenty of blame to heap on both men and women since they both have been suckered in by the greatest threat to Western civilation known to man, which is none other than nihilism. Nothing matters other than the moment and feeling good, pretty shallow all around. Women might read shallow rags like People, Cosmo, etc, but guys have Maxim, Playboy, SI, etc themselves. The Sexual Revolution has blured the sex roles so badly nobody knows how to be a man or woman anymore.I have met just as many shallow guys as gals.
