The Lobby Strikes

Posted by Justin Raimondo on August 27, 2007

The publication of The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy, a book-length version of the now-famous essay by John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, is—naturally!—an occasion for the Lobby to go into high gear, and the intimidation tactics are already well along. Mearsheimer and Walt were invited by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs to speak before the group, but the event was cancelled by the group’s president, Marshall Bouton, who gave out the party line that the two could not be permitted to speak without a “balancing” point of view by none other than Abe ”What Armenian Genocide?” Foxman. That’s the Lobby’s “argument”—that Mearsheimer and Walt’s thesis is so “toxic” that it cannot be allowed to stand alone, without a “corrective” offered by the Anti-Defamation League or some other outfit associated with the Thought Police.

This just goes to confirm the authors’ thesis, expressed in their London Review of Books piece:

“The Lobby pursues two broad strategies. First, it wields its significant influence in Washington, pressuring both Congress and the executive branch. Whatever an individual lawmaker or policymaker’s own views may be, the Lobby tries to make supporting Israel the ‘smart’ choice. Second, it strives to ensure that public discourse portrays Israel in a positive light, by repeating myths about its founding and by promoting its point of view in policy debates. The goal is to prevent critical comments from getting a fair hearing in the political arena. Controlling the debate is essential to guaranteeing US support, because a candid discussion of US-Israeli relations might lead Americans to favour a different policy.”

if anyone from the lobby is reading this:  don’t you think it would make this book look ridiculous if you DIDN’T do stuff like Mr raimondo describes?  if you just let this book run it’s course in the media without saying a word, it would disprove about half the book. think about it

we have a problem in america ...it is unwavering support for the crimes of the state of israel.

this quote is from malcolm hoenlein...they recognize what is going on and have for long before we saw it approaching.

In the beginning of the Iraq war they talked about the neocons‚ as a code word,” Hoenlein said. „Now we see that code words are no longer necessary.” He warned that the United States is nearing a situation similar to that of Britain, where delegitimization of Israel is widespread.

„This is a cancer that starts from the top and works its way down,” he said. „It poisons the opinions among elites which trickle down into society.”

According to Hoenlein, such critics tend not only to delegitimize Israel but also to „intimidate American Jews not to speak out.” He called on American Jews to take action against this phenomenon, saying that Christian Zionists seemed at times more willing than Jews to fight back.

here are dershowitzs words at herzliya…

please god let his words come true..

He pointed to 4 recent events that, according to Dershowitz, could bring about a “perfect storm” in the otherwise close relations between the U.S. & Israel.

The first event was carters book, the second was anti israel discussions in academic circles, the third was Media War being fought by Hizbullah & Hamas against Israel. the fourth was general wesley clarkes comments about ny money wanting to take the u.s to war in iran....

If AIPAC can goad the Federal govt. into global war
then I’d say we have reached the bitter end of the
American experiment. As bad as things are, if the
next election cycle doesn’t improve things then I
think we should brace for a complete meltdown of
western rationality.

here is where they feel they need to improve...aipac and these great americans feel that they havent been forceful enough in the past...can you believe these arrogant traitors, they are still a nation within a nation. below is more hoenlein at herzliya ...

Hoenlein dated the trend to the 2005 arrest of two former employees of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, on charges of passing classified national security information. Hoenlein argued that the Jewish community made a major mistake by not forcefully criticizing the arrests.

I expect the reviews and comments for the book on Amazon to be quite entertaining.

I’m curious to see how many different people from different sides the reviewers can compare to Nazis/Hitler.

I expect there to be a lot of Zioclown apologists that will constantly try to sidetrack the issue through the usual means.  Pointing to other states in the region as the real enemy, barking the antisemitism charge, and saying things like how “Democratic” Israel is and how it is the only “Democracy” in the region.  Like that matters in terms of who we support and who we don’t, *cough* Saudi Arabia *cough*

The Saudis and the Israelis are both perceptual poison, and the Establishment is so rotten to the core that the poison does not affect it.

If the Israeli’s want a good way to sway the American people into accepting its policies toward the Palestinians it should hire the marketing team for Harrah’s or Caesar’s Palace.  American’s love gambling, and the prospect of turning the little disjointed patches of land that the Israeli Government finally “gives” the Palestinians into casinos would give us something we can relate to.

Since the US is an expert in destroying populations, seizing their land, and turning them into Texas Hold’ Em dealers hundreds of miles away in Oklahoma, than the people should be able to relate to the Israeli’s doing the same thing.

If Israel were the least bit honest it would declare open war upon America, for that is the situation. Their agents and sympathizers here corrupt our politics, direct our war-making and foreign policy, loot our Treasury to the tune of tens of billions of dollars, and are loyal to a state other than the United States. It was Israeli spies we caught celebrating across the river from the WTC on 9/11 and their former prime minister Netanyahu who called the attacks “very good for Israel” on that very day ... this very posting has worked its way through Israeli front company Comvers Infosys before it ever made it onto Taki’s site.

I think, rather objectively, it was better for all, if you Americans just would let the Israelis make whatever peace and understanding they could make with their neighbours.  Since they are quite strong, militarily, it should be just as possible as any Middle East nation from one muslim variety live peacefully with one from another variety - though they certainly in the past had big fights.

To me it looks as if you are indulging in past glory of service to mankind, namely WWII. So you have to keep this attitude alive that the Israelis are victims of holocaust, and anyone not nursing them are really mass murderers of mind.  Certainly a rather naive and childish grasp of the world!  And for heavens sake:  The War was over 62 years ago!  Get yourself a life!

I’m a liberal Democrat who’s an avid reader and quarterly supporter of antiwar.com.

The stuff about the attempt to contain the “threat” posed by the book made me decide to buy it (same thing happened with Jimmy Carter’s book).  This, despite the fact that while I agree with the book’s thesis and would probably find it an interesting read, I likely would not have purchased it otherwise because of what the _Onion_ has so accurately referred to as “liberal outrage fatigue.”

Pass the Armenian Genocide resolution in the next congress;, Turkey will rant and rave and with a little luck through the US out of Incirlik. Perhaps then this little people with their large historical suffering will gift our country with logistical complexities to prevent another war in Iran.

Walt & Mearsheimer’s Proof That ‘Tail Wagged the Dog’ Points American Jews to a Universalist Ethos:

http://www.philipweiss.org/mondoweiss/2007/09/more-on-walt-me.html

New book challenges US support for Israel
NEW YORK: An upcoming book challenging whether diplomatic and military support for Israel is in the best interests of the United States is set to spark fresh debate on Washington’s role in the Middle East.
“The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy,” written by two of the United States’ most influential political science professors, is set to hit the bookshelves next Tuesday and promises to break the taboo on the subject. Written by John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt from Harvard, the book follows an article they published last year that stirred impassioned debate by setting out a similar position.
Their thesis is that US endorsement of Israel is not fully explained by strategic or moral reasons, but by the pressure exerted by Jewish lobbyists, Christian fundamentalists and neo-conservatives with Zionist sympathies.
The result, according to the book, is an unbalanced US foreign policy in the Middle East, the US invasion of Iraq, the threat of war with Iran or Syria and a fragile security situation for the entire Western world. “Israel is not the strategic asset to the United States that many claim. Israel may have been a strategic asset during the Cold War, but it has become a growing liability now that the Cold War is over,” the authors said.
“Unconditional support for Israel has reinforced anti-Americanism around the world, helped fuel America’s terrorism problem, and strained relations with other key allies in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia,” they added.
According to the two writers, “backing Israel’s harsh treatment of the Palestinians has reinforced Anti-Americanism around the world and almost certainly helped terrorists recruit new followers.”
Abraham Foxman, director of the Anti-Defamation League, described the book as “an insidious, biased account of the Arab-Israeli conflict and of the role of supporters of Israel in the US,” in an interview with AFP.
“Everything about American policy toward the conflict is presented in exaggerated form, as if America is completely one-sided in support of Israel and that those policies are simply the product of the Israel lobby.” He is countering Mearsheimer and Walt’s book with his own title: “The Deadliest Lies: The Israel Lobby and the Myth of Jewish Control,” due out on the same day.
Mearsheimer and Walt highlight the three billion dollars in US economic and military aid that Israel receives every year - more than any other country. They also point to Washington’s diplomatic support: between 1972 and 2006, the United States vetoed 42 United Nations Security Council resolutions that were critical of Israel, while watering down many others under threat of veto. Foxman counters that the special relationship works both ways and that the United States has gained much out of its ally.
The Chicago Council on Global Affairs canceled a public debate on the issue planned for September and featuring Mearsheimer and Walt when they were unable to schedule a time that Foxman could also manage.
In the conclusion of their book, Mearsheimer and Walt say that the United States must change its policy towards Israel. “The United States would be a better ally if its leaders could make support for Israel more conditional and if they could give their Israeli counterparts more candid advice without facing a backlash from the Israel lobby.” With just over a year until the 2008 US presidential election, however, they said the issue was unlikely to even enter the debate. afp
