Patrick J. Buchanan

Welcome to Obamaland!

Posted by Patrick J. Buchanan on October 28, 2008

Undeniably, a powerful tide is running for the Democratic Party, with one week left to Election Day.

Bush’s approval rating is 27 percent, just above Richard Nixon’s Watergate nadir and almost down to Carter-Truman lows. After each of those presidents reached their floors—in 1952, 1974, 1980—the opposition party captured the White House.

Moreover, 80 percent to 90 percent of Americans think the nation is on the wrong course, and since mid-September, when McCain was still slightly ahead, the Dow has lost 4,000 points—$5 trillion to $6 trillion in value.

Leading now by eight points in an average of national polls, Barack Obama has other advantages.

Not a single blue state is regarded as imperiled or even a toss-up, while Obama leads in six crucial red states: Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Missouri and Colorado. Should McCain lose one of the six, he would have to win Pennsylvania to compensate for the lost electoral votes. But the latest Pennsylvania polls show Barack with a double-digit lead.

Lately moving into the toss-up category are Nevada, North Dakota, Montana and Indiana. All voted twice for George W. Bush.

Not only is Obama ahead in the state and national polls, he has more money, is running far more ads, has a superior organization on the ground, attracts larger crowds, and has greater enthusiasm and more media in camp. And new voter registrations heavily favor the Democrats.

Though Congress is regarded by Americans with a disdain bordering on disgust—five of six Americans think it has done a poor job—Democratic majorities are certain to grow. Indeed, with Democrats favored by 10 points over Republicans, Nancy Pelosi’s majority could grow by 25 seats and Harry Reid could find himself with a filibuster-proof majority of 60 senators.

Democrats already have 49, plus two independents: Socialist Bernie Sanders and Independent Joe Lieberman. Their challengers are now ahead in New Hampshire, Virginia, North Carolina, New Mexico, Minnesota, Oregon and Colorado, with a chance of picking up Georgia, Alaska, Kentucky and Mississippi.

We may be looking at a reverse of 1980, when Reagan won a 10-point victory over Jimmy Carter, and Republicans took the Senate and, working with Boll Weevil Democrats, effective control of the House.

With his tax cuts, defense buildup and rollback policy against the “Evil Empire,” Reagan gave us some of the best years of our lives, culminating in America’s epochal victory in the Cold War.

What does the triumvirate of Obama-Pelosi-Reid offer?

Rep. Barney Frank is calling for new tax hikes on the most successful and a 25 percent across-the-board slash in national defense. Sen. John Kerry is talking up new and massive federal spending, a la FDR’s New Deal. Specifically, we can almost surely expect:

-- Swift amnesty for 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens and a drive to make them citizens and register them, as in the Bill Clinton years. This will mean that Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona will soon move out of reach for GOP presidential candidates, as has California.

-- Border security will go on the backburner, and America will have a virtual open border with a Mexico of 110 million.

-- Taxes will be raised on the top 5 percent of wage-earners, who now carry 60 percent of the U.S. income tax burden, and tens of millions of checks will be sent out to the 40 percent of wage-earners who pay no federal income tax. Like the man said, redistribute the wealth, spread it around.

-- Social Security taxes will be raised on the most successful among us, and capital gains taxes will be raised from 15 percent to 20 percent. The Bush tax cuts will be repealed, and death taxes reimposed.

-- Two or three more liberal activists of the Ruth Bader Ginsberg-John Paul Stevens stripe will be named to the Supreme Court. U.S. district and appellate courts will be stacked with “progressives.”

-- Special protections for homosexuals will be written into all civil rights laws, and gays and lesbians in the military will be invited to come out of the closet. “Don’t ask, don’t tell” will be dead.

-- The homosexual marriages that state judges have forced California, Massachusetts and Connecticut to recognize, an Obama Congress or Obama court will require all 50 states to recognize.

-- A “Freedom of Choice Act” nullifying all state restrictions on abortions will be enacted. America will become the most pro-abortion nation on earth.

-- Affirmative action—hiring and promotions based on race, sex and sexual orientation until specified quotas are reached—will be rigorously enforced throughout the U.S. government and private sector.

-- Universal health insurance will be enacted, covering legal and illegal immigrants, providing another powerful magnet for the world to come to America, if necessary by breaching her borders.

-- A federal bailout of states and municipalities to keep state and local governments spending up could come in December or early next year.

-- The first trillion-dollar deficit will be run in the first year of an Obama presidency. It will be the first of many.

Welcome to Obamaland!

What did we expect would be the result of the mad arrogance and insane policies of the
Republican party over the past 8 years, and the neocons in general over the past 20 years?
If we are truly a conservative nation we will begin to live like one, and we will find a
truly conservative party to do our will.  The Republicans deserve a drubbing, and we
citizens deserve “Obamaland.” I believe our government is only a projection of our society.
I suspect real conservatives must face the fact that we are a tiny minority in a socialist,
atheist, and theraputic nation.

so basically the economic plan pat outlines in “the great betrayal” will be put in effect

Yes… we’re to be driven out of the Eden created by Bush and the GOP: Eight years of balanced budgets, a reduced national debt, sealed borders and well-managed health care. Even if Obama and the Democrats are as catastrophic as you propose - how much worse would their era be than the Bush/Republican regime? The seeds of the coming Nov. 4 debacle were planted by the Right itself.

Buchanan lays out the facts in a clear and concise way, and the clear conclusion from these facts is that any conservative supporting Obama either 1) never was much of a conservative to begin with or 2) no longer is one.

Tom,
You forgot another option; any conservative supporting Obama maybe 3)a self-hating masochist.

Amen Pat: You are only telling the truth.

I wonder whether Obama will be able to enact his plans. If he maintains or increases spending, there’s a chance foreign entities will stop subsidizing us. Very likely, if increased taxes are an expectation for his administration, the stock market will continue it’s rout, as investors (and his biggest donors) flee. I appreciate that his most cherished ideas are bad, but I don’t know that he’ll have the leverage to enact them without facing riots.

Perhaps all those things will happen, perhaps not. Regardless, Obama will have a clear mandate to overturn the current status quo where the top earners find ways not to pay taxes (offshore accounts, phony philantropy, phony businesses, special tax-avoiding accountancy, etc., things not available to the middle class that plays by the rules); where true health care is available only to the rich and famous, while the rest put up with mediocre death-defying HMOs; where the banking, military, oil, drug undustries, and agro monopolies are looting the treasury and taxpayers to the last dime.

If Obama engages in weird excesses that Democrats are known for- and he’d be a fool if he did, Democrats would lose Congress in a snap and the American people would let Republicans play the one and only role they are good for: opposition in Congress. But for now Republicans need to be banished from Washington and sent packing so they can meditate and re-evaluate themseleves and what they have done. How they wasted a tremendous opportunity to turn this country around having so much control and having been giving blank checks in virtually every area. Instead the took the opportunity to repay their johns ten times over and destroy this country. Good-bye Neoconland and corporate-crookland.

P.S. Rejection of the Republican Culture of Corruption (good phrase) does not mean support for Obama, by the way,

And Lo! Pat never once mentioned BO’s promised foreign adventures.  If his military slashes pass, I suppose he’ll have to content himself with repeating Bill Clinton’s “successful” air strikes from 35,000 feet over Belgrade. A fellow can do a lot of damage with bombs only.  God help the Afghans, the Iraqis, the Iranians and the Syrians. They, and we, are in for it.

Well one plus will be the end of the immigration problem, who knows it could soon turn to an emigration problem.

why shouldn’t a conservative support obama?

he’s more likely to bring about peace and prosperity than mcCain.  are peace and prosperity not conservative values?

who cares about the details?  just because a president is liberal doesn’t mean you have to be.  do you all run huge universities that deal with the affirmative action issue?

are you afraid you won’t be able to see people walking aruond with serious health conditions?

competence is more important than ideology.  in fact, ideology is unimportant

Pat,

Citing Derbyshire (form long ago):
We are doomed, doomed, doomed !

Although I never voted for Bush at least it will be more satisfying to get screwed by someone other than our own.  I want to see the Democrats left holding this bag.  At least Barney Frank has two decent ideas.  Tax the rich and cut military spending.

It seems the Bolshevik’s 5th column - aka neocons - have succeeded to destroy the conservative political movement in this country over the past eight years from the inside. It should have been clear to anybody in the GOP that people coming out of the trotskyist movement usually do not hold conservative values dear to their heart. But supported by a cabal of the media ownership and well heeled special interests that financed them, they succeeded in the destruction of the American moral backbone. The gullibility of the American populace really knows no limits. History will look back on the Obama period as the time when the American populace finally chose to become domesticated wards of the state. And so the American experiment of a “league of freemen in a republic” comes to an end, replaced by a “league of freeloaders in a democracy”.

All Good points Pat, but look on the bright side, if one quarter of this stuff happens we will be able to retake congress with people who “Get It.” As these things happen our role should be to cull the heard of potential candidates of any who in any way support the Bush/Neocon tendency. If we can do that we will have done our culture and nation a great service. In the mean time we need to keep the pressure on regarding immigration. I doubt that even the new Obama congressmen will want to cross the public on that one. Finally we need to make it clear to the even dumbest bunnies among the public that only the Paleocon movement really supports middle class interests. Letting the Democrats steal the title of defenders of the middle class was one of the worst blunders of the Bush years. If we can make people see that the D’s are the party of the idle rich and the parasitic poor we can win, and keep winning.

The Republicans deserve to lose for handing the party over to Zionist Trotskyites and allowing them to manipulate us into fighting wars in the M.E. on behalf of Israel. But the sad thing is, in true parasitic fashion, the neo-cons will simply move back to the Democrat party and try to manipulate Obama into continuing their insane M.E. adventures, having killed off the Republican host. In fact, this was a brilliant move on the Trotskyites’ part, b/c now that they’ve killed the Republican party, they no longer have to pretend to respect Christian values or tolerate social conservatives.

Let’s not overstate the Dem’s ability to get out of their own way. Giving them full reign in the Senate, House, and the Executive will remove any ability they have to place the blame for their own mistakes and excesses elswhere. They will descend into petty in fighting and excessive corruption within 6 months.

Ooops! I was referring to the HERD not heard in my post.

“Nancy Pelosi’s majority could grow by 25 seats”

Goodbye Nancy, Hello Cindy.

As these things happen our role should be to cull the heard of potential candidates of any who in any way support the Bush/Neocon tendency.

That’s the one gleam of light at the end of this endless worm hole, Mr. Meehan, that this year’s disaster will force the Right into the wasteland, where it can purge itself of neoconservative toxins. Mr. Hoermann is correct: Neocons consumed the conservative movement from inside out - and maybe that was the damn intention! Intellectuals, my ass!

Conservatives are now about to pay a huge price for the sin of electing and supporting frat-boy Bush, soulless Cheney and their Neocon court-jester cabal of pseudo-intellectuals, Zionists, Friedmanites and Wall Street hustlers. Obama, the Democrats, the accelerated socialism, the continued destruction of America are merely the wages of sin.

It’s really too bad that the Bush-Cheney-Gingrich generation of American conservatives were so lacking in character and principle, and were ultimately such atheistic, warmongering, tub-thumping money-worshippers—were, in fact, the anti-thesis of authentic conservatism. You reap what you sow.

Like the alcoholic, conservatism is going to have to hit rock-bottom before it can be built up by some future generation of principled conservatives and Christians, if such a future in America is ever again possible.

Of course, the destruction of America has been a two-party enterprise, and the Bush-Cheney-Clinton generations are likely going to go down in American history as “The Worst Generation.” What truly selfish and disgusting specimens they are.

Even if, as anticipated, the Republicans go down in flames yet again and the neocons flee to the Democratic side....what’s to keep them from returning if / when the tide tunrs in the favor of conservatives? Do we really believe that we’re motivated enough, or have precautions in place to keep them out after they’ve left?

Now Lester....if ideology is, as you assert “unimportant”, it would perhaps seem that the wingnuts of this Clusterboink Theology Administration did real good.

But, I can think of nothing better to do than hand off the evidence and hence probable cause to the Left so that it will reside comfortably in amiable surroundings in order that the ongoing pooching be strong, slow and steady like a long play Barry White Seduction Soundtrack.

The deficiency of this vain hope can be summed up easily though…
“Conservatives”,....what conservatives? Bush and the boys have taken us all on an extended Snipe Hunt for them and it would seem that the bird is now mythical.

dirk- well it’s less important than competence.  I’d rather thava democrat who does a good job than a republican who can spout off platitudes perfectly while ruining the country economically and otherwise.

every year they have a pro life rally across the street from the white house.  every year bush phones in his support from across the street.  I don’t care how pro life you are, that’s not worth putting up with the rest

Amnesty for illegal immigrants is a shoo-in no matter which Republicrat wins the presidential election.  The only difference I can really see between the two major candidates is the greater probability of “gun control” legislation getting passed under the reign of the Messiah.  I expect that he will channel Mayor Daley’s ideas on to the national stage, just as he was a mouthpiece for them in the Illinois General Assembly.  I suspect that I am not the only person thinking this to be the case judging by the substantially increasing sales of weapons and ammunition happening this year.

….  Werner Hoermann:  “and so the American experiment of a “league of freemen in a republic” comes to an end, replaced by a “league of freeloaders in a democracy”. ---- (most excellent)

It has been often noted that the difference between the two tyrannical parties is minimal at best and utterly meaningless at worst… with the latter becoming more evident every four years.  Would McCainLand prove any better?  Is this not the creature that co-authored amnesties with that other bloat faced senator in the Washington make believe world of right vs. left?  The only big difference between his blustering ego and narcotic zed world view and that of Bush/Cheney is that McCain is more trigger happy and less mentally stable.  --- Blowback and seeing the GOP on its knees is the only happy note being played in this election.  We are indeed getting the government most deserved.

To blubber endlessly on and on about how one party might affect a viable difference over the other or to profess any hope in some distant future as a result of only the latest back and forth between two false rivals is to fail to grasp the very nature of Democracy within an Empire.  In the Spirit of Mencken let us hope that the future clubs pow-wowing revolves around the principle that democracies are simply doomed to failure by their very nature.  They fail because they extend the franchise of freedom to the masses.  The masses, never capable of discerning the finer nuances of whom or what is bamboozling them fall into the well-laid traps of successful special interest groups. Successful special interest groups ultimately seize power and milk the body politic into chaos and destruction.  This simple formula was duly noted and laid bare long before the neo-cons seized power in this country.  Blaming and crying about their success seems futile.

To posit hope in some distant future where-in honest leaders backed by Christian conservatives lead us back to order and sanity is to ignore the evidence of the last 100 years in general and specifically the most recent re-election of George W.  Did not the Christian Right launch George W. back into the big house after 9-11 based upon their belief in and fear of the War on Terror?  And what is the war on terror except the most pristine example of just how a democracy works, i.e., it is pure fabrication constructed by a special interest in order to remain (or seize) in power.

Let us look for solutions beyond (or before) the false pretense of a meaningless right vs. left.

If just one of Buchanan’s predictions comes true we are doomed.  The legalization of 20 - 30 million immigrants, the opening of our borders, the relaxation of border security and the subsequent invasion by 40 - 100 million additional 3rd world immigrants will spell the perpetual death knell for the Conservative movement.

McCain will do nearly precisely the same thing vis a vis immigration.  2 years from now when the sky is falling?  Well, we’ll have 20 million or more ADDITIONAL Democratic voters who will secure the election for the Dhimmicrats no matter how bad things are.

One more thing:  the election of B.H. Obama will guarantee either an armed civil war or, more likely, the total route of the Conservative movement, the destruction of our culture and the demise of our nation.  IN the final analysis we do not have the will to fight particularly when so few will be on our side.

Want to know what it will be like in 20 - 30 years or less?  Go rent the foreign film Lives of Others.  It is a tremendous flick and quite sobering in light of what is happening.

“To posit hope in some distant future where-in honest leaders backed by Christian conservatives lead us back to order and sanity is to ignore the evidence of the last 100 years in general and specifically the most recent re-election of George W.  Did not the Christian Right launch George W. back into the big house after 9-11 based upon their belief in and fear of the War on Terror?”

The contemporary American Christian Right is neither Christian, nor conservative. It is a Judaized, Zionized vessel of bigots, charlatans and intellectual primates. If left-liberals were Communist useful idiots in the 20th century, the Christian Right is primarily comprised of Zionist useful idiots in the 21st.

What I would characterize as Ron Paul/Pat Buchanan Christians have very little in common with the Christian Right when it comes to world view other than their shared general social conservatism on domestic issues.

San Fernando Curt sed: “Even if Obama and the Democrats are as catastrophic as you propose - how much worse would their era be than the Bush/Republican regime?”

Raven said: Pat, More appropriate title for your article: “ BLOWBACK! “

The tax cutting---without spending cuts---policies of the Bush/Republican regime have driven the US economy into the gutter...Reagan liked to cut taxes, but he wasn’t able to cut spending, and the result was deficits...under Bush, the deficits are much worse.

Even worse, the Republicans have adopted the wacko “deregulation” ideology of the idiot “Laissez Faire” crowd, and Wall Street greed did what Wall Street does, and speculated the US economy into further crisis.

Not to mention the insane Israel Frist foreign policy agenda...unrestrained immigration, and the entire “diversity” agenda…

So now you expect to play that old song you sing, called “The Culture War”, and you expect anyone to care?

NObody is listening, real conservativism is as dead as Nader “progressivism” is on the Left.

“Rep. Barney Frank is calling for new tax hikes on the most successful and a 25 percent across-the-board slash in national defense....”

Well that alone is a good reason to vote Democratic across the board. The military-industrial complex is a vampire on the body of the country.

the defense thing will be easier than people think.  he can just say we will still spend more than all the other countries in the world combined, which is true. he can say some obama stuff and get it done!! :)

Hang the neocons! As for these pathetic “paleos” endorsing Obama, you’re off my Christmas card list!

Um, the re-imposition of the so-called assault weapons ban. Pelosi, Reid, and BHO will all love that, even though when it has been clearly shown to have been a needless restriction on the law abiding in the 1990s.

How could Pat have forgotten that?

Get your AR-15’s and Sig Sauer P220’s while supplies last.

Someone mentioned that the coming “open borders” might cause an emigration problem for the US. Where, pray tell, would one emigrate to??? “Remember, remember, the 5th of November”.

All the Democrats have to do to assure a win is to coax McCain and Palin into holding outdoor rallies in the rain. Their supporters will begin to look up at the sky with their mouth open and drown.

Republican lemmings despise the Constitution and are nothing more than a lynch mob these days with contempt and hatred for the law and Constitution and a big chunk of their fellow Americans. I always wondered how Germany could have become so evil under Hitler remembering it was the land of Beethoven and others but the fallen nature of man means we are reluctant to resist the glamor of evil. And if the so-called moral Christians are the ones failing, what hope does this country have?

The TSA is probably the best symbol of Republicanism. A bunch government thieves and perverts that man handle and molest your wives and mothers and steal what they like and claim its all part of protecting people. The Pentagon in miniature. By flying we apparently agree to waive 100% of our Constitutional rights. Benjamin Franklin was right.

We already have a national socialist police state. The Stasi veterans are looking in envy at our $50Billion surveillance state. Everyone has a dossier or will as soon as the NSA gets its Texas databases up.

Tcha. Don’t try to scare me with a Democrat. We should all be thanking God for the demise of these Republican bastards and demanding the Democrats undo the enabling laws and bring down the Empire.

@ Chris Moore writes:

“ The contemporary American Christian Right is neither Christian, nor conservative. It is a Judaized, Zionized vessel of bigots, charlatans and intellectual primates….  “

--- Clearly, as you properly state, there does exist a vast difference between the “Ron Paul/Pat Buchanan Christians vs. the warmly defined group you mentioned above.  And as no one amongst the rank and file of “alternative Right” conservatives would likely disagree, such disparity is both alarming and perhaps the nexus behind much of our aggrieved collective condition.

It is with the respect of a brother in arms against the tide of barbarism into which we are sliding that I wish to suggest we consider why so very, very few of the Ron Paul/Chronicles paleo Christians are found within the walls of our paltry camp?  So few in fact we must consider them something of an absolute anomaly.  These few however, seem a collective in suggesting that what ails us is our having strayed from our Christian faith and heritage.

We must look more closely at your definition of the critical mass of Christians in hopes it reveals something that may be useful.

I concurred almost completely with your cited definition of this group, however I think you were incorrect in suggesting they are non-christians.  A host of authors, both living and deceased, have pointed out that the values which underlie the Christian Faith, are those of Tolerance, Egalitarianism, and Passivity.  It seems democracy and Christianity are (is) anything but impartial bedfellows; they are a marriage made in heaven.  It seems more accurate to suggest that the Christians you lovingly castigate as non-christians are in fact truly… Christians.  They seem to behave in rather exact accordance to their religious principles.

In any case, the hoped for message within my former post was not an attack upon Christian faith or principles but rather a pointed stab at the root of the belief that democracy was a foundation upon which we could hope to posit hope….  It is eternally flawed and deserving (in the spirit of Mencken) our cutting its throat rather than continue to dance to its tune.

“A host of authors, both living and deceased, have pointed out that the values which underlie the Christian Faith, are those of Tolerance, Egalitarianism, and Passivity.  It seems democracy and Christianity are (is) anything but impartial bedfellows; they are a marriage made in heaven.”

I think it was Joe Sobran who said something like “being a Christian doesn’t mean being a doormat.” It’s too bad more Christian don’t follow the example of Christ himself and flog the thieves, interlopers, charlatans and mooches from the American temple.

@Paleofuture
“Well one plus will be the end of the immigration problem, who knows it could soon turn to an emigration problem.”

Keep in mind there’s a new law for expatriates...if you leave, everything gets taxed...it’s like the emigration laws in Germany in the 30s and other such jurisdictions.

We were bushwhacked! It’s only appropriate that the worst president would give birth to the next worst president.

And how exactly would Obamaland differ from McCaincountry?

Although I understand the need for immigration controls, the nativist/anti-immigration streak is something I don’t like about my corner of the right.

(RCs, remember the 1840s? Russell Kirk’s Protestant villages didn’t take too kindly to the Catholic Irish coming in IIRC.)

I am puzzled by all the controversy in the USA over Universal Health care,

We have had such a scheme in Australia for over 30 years, and it works fine for most people’
We all pay a small levy to Medicare in our income tax and that entitles me to Free care from my local Doctor,or any other I visist.
I pay by using a credit card supplied by the National Health Commision to EVERYONE in Australia.whether tax payer or not.
If I am referred or need tests or Xrays that is covered too.

All medications are pegged at the same price if prescribed by a doctor($25 per item). All over 60 years of age get medications for $5,,,and once the elderly have paid $150 per annum ..all are free for the rest of the hear.
Public hospitals and all treatments are free.In recent years
I have had two total knee replacements, and then following a Brain eneurism I had a series of operations and a month in hospital(much in intensive care)and some weeks in a Rehad unit..... all again free.
National porgrams against cancer,TB,High Blood-pressure and many other serious ailments are all free to participants as are all preventive programs and much treatment for children in programs involving vacination, and currently a program for teen-age girls against cervical cancer

All this is provided by the use of my card when needed. Recently I spent a day in a major public hospital being tested for bowel cancer..which was not found to be present..That good news came free!and is part of a national screening program.

Here the NHS is so popular that no conservative government has ever tried to end it.
Americans will wonder they were the last people in the OECD to embark on such a program..wwhen they have such a scheme......
