They, unlike my ethnic group, place a high value on education and the arts. I’ve never met a Jew who couldn’t read and write. Of the three best works of non-fiction that I’ve read in the past 30 years, aside from religion, two have been written by Jews: Martin van Creveld and David Hackett Fischer. Find me a Biblical translator better than the Jew Robert Alter, who has the grace to know better than anyone both ancient Hebrew and English letters. Put down and oppressed, Jews resolved to out-perform gentiles, and the Jews succeeded. Like Catholics they have a deep respect for law. Themselves the victims of defamation and injustice, they have taken the lead for human rights and for rule by consent, not coercion. They have a noble religion, one that they haven’t tried to cram down others’ throats. In every single area of achievement they have superlative contributions. AND, they’re smart enough not to march in lockstep. They also tend to be a shade paranoid. Judging from some writebackers’ remarks, they have good reason. 2. The history of immigrant groups in the Lincolnlands has been one of each group wishing the USA to side with its home country. The Irish-Americans (themselves with memories of NINA signs) and German-Americans (denigrated by Franklin as “Palatine Boors”) wished Wilson to intervene in World War I on the side of the Central Powers (and they were indeed rooting for the right side). Ethnic Catholics in the USA, in the 20s and 30s, joined Clerical Fascists in telling us how wonderful Benito was (and some still telling us). I remember being invited at a St. Patrick’s Day fair to buy a bullet to kill British soldiers in Northern Ireland (I was ashamed that day to be Catholic). Paisley was a big hit at Bob Jones. Then there is our home-grown Black Hand, who condemn Neocons (not all Jewish) for demanding that US boys – mostly “Scots Irish”, Dixons, and minorities – die for Israel, and then wish hypocritically for the same USA boys to bleed for Serbia, be it against the Habsburgs, be it against Turks and Albanians. (I'm not taking sides in this matter, mind you; it's just that Serbia or Albania isn't, so to speak, worth an American life or an American dollar.) So do y’all really expect Jews to be any different with respect to a Jewish state? Frankly, a far more serious malady than Yankee Zionism is Yankee Francophilia, and even Jefferson was a victim of it, to say nothing of Henry Adams, Henry James, Susan Sontag, the Kennedy dynasty, and the entire Northeast, where Francophila has survived the “freedom fries” frenzy. Yet the very worst obsequious boot-licking by Gringos is Anglophilia. Once twisting the Lion’s tail, at least among Jeffersonians, was daily bread. But since the Republicans came into power, Anglophilia has afflicted us. Gringoland remains, for all practical purposes, a cultural colony of Perfidious Albion. Just look at “TV worth watching”. The Christmas tree, actually German, was imported from England because Prince Albert, a German, imported it there. Americans, as that great Anglophobe Mencken correctly observed, know more about Westminster Hall and the York Minster than they do about the Mormon Tabernacle or the Mt. Sinai Synagogue in Philadelphia. Americans know about British 2nd raters like Shaw and Scott, little about 1st rate O’Neal and O’Connor, and nothing about the Himalayan heights of Dante, Goethe, Schiller, Mann, and Rilke. Whitman, Melville, and Poe became famous among Americans only because they first were famous among Englishmen. Almost all foreign news comes to Americans via British sources. Americans swoon at the sound of an Oxbridge accent, immediately assuming someone like Christopher Hitchins is a oracle, and that Joan Collins is upper class top drawer. And maybe she is compared to Gringos. The average Yankee is really nothing but a 5rd rate lower class Englishman of the Puritan and Dissenter persuasion, fit only for emotional binges, aesthetic crudity, lynching bees, and witch-hunts. One commentator, who is usually and decidedly 1st rate in what he writes, recently has taken to whooping for the House of Lords, a body that fought Catholic Emancipation, the Great Reform Bill, the Abolition of the Slave Trade, the repeal of the Corn Laws, and judged the guilty Hastings innocent. (To be fair, I'm guilty of falling sometimes for Jacobite propaganda.) From John Hay onward, the US State Department is really nothing but an antechamber of the British Foreign Office. In two world wars, Lincolnland carried out the wishes of its British Master. In World War One, a foreign policy blunder that makes Iraq looks like the Congress of Vienna, Wilson utterly obeyed the British. The US Army in France, put under mediocre French and British commanders, was used largely for cannon fodder. So before Gringos take the speck out of the Gringo-Zionist’s eye, Gringos have beams to remove from their own. (To be fair again, I myself, when not for Dixie, whoop a lot for Middle Europe and Italy.) It seems to me that the issue in the Near East can be stated without considering Israel at all: American presence in the Near East simply isn’t needed at if the purpose is to defend Israel. Israel has the bomb, and that’s all she needs. Thus, and to her credit, she is making a real effort at peace in Annapolis – when she really doesn’t have to.
