Men can act masculine only if they have a goal. In a few places the author refers to men protecting "their women". In the archipelago of personal islands that is modern culture, there is nothing to protect. Chivalry only works because meekness is a virtue - the strong use their strength in a sort of redistribution of graces to protect the weak. Instead the "weak" often call lawyers or the constabulary when there is even the hint of a problem. They are no longer weak in anything recognizable. And you can see the parallel with the robin-hood taxation. That leaves honor, but that must be, well, honored.
