To anticipate a defeat of Ron Paul is not to indulge in despair. Despair is the loss of the theological virtue of hope -- which cannot be sundered from faith (nor from charity). "Put not your faith in Princes" is not a call to despair. Nor is the anticipation that a cad, a liar, a traitor, or an inveterate warmonger might win an election. There's nothing there for God to forgive (except, oremus, fallacious powers of prediction). Secular hope, Secular faith, secular charity are all heretical monstrosities.
