Message: Entry: The Kissinger Connection Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_kissinger_connection#1169 Post contents: I'm not sure it's clear that Kissinger was behind the scenes before and in the early stages of the occupation. What was his position in fall 2002-summer 2003 on the Bush administration and Iraq? I got the impression when State of Denial came out that Cheney et al. looked to him for friendly advice and more importantly, moral support for a hardline anti-withdrawal position, than for serious political advice that was taken seriously. Kissinger was a crafty, cynical, ruthless S.O.B. But he was damn effective for the power elite. The neocons seem to be just as cynical and ruthless but with 0 effectiveness for the power elite whatsoever. That's why I'm not convinced the failure in Iraq can in any way seriously be contributed to Kissinger's influence over Team Bush. Garner got canned when he started talking about universal health care for Iraqis (which the U.S. doesn't even have) and really dumb statements like: "We ought to be beating our chests every day. We ought to look in the mirror, stick out our chests, suck in our bellies, and say, 'Damn, we're Americans,' and smile." Lastly, on the Dems: they are pro-war/pro-occupation because they are pro-American empire. They only brought us WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Kosovo in the 20th century. Did we think Y2K would change them into some kind of peace party? They want those permanent bases in Iraq just as much as the GOP does, they just think a partial withdrawal would get them closer to that goal. Sent at: 2008 05 16
