Message: Entry: It Can't Happen Here Link: http://www.takimag.com/blogs/article/it_cant_happen_here#12231 Post contents: Andy Capp, "how much worse the USofA is going to be under the return of the caliphate, as opposed to what it is like under Yankee Protestants" There is historical evidence which is relevant to your statement, and which you thus may want to consider: in its strictest form, Protestantism spread to four areas: Calvinist Switzerland, Calvinist Netherlands, Puritan England and the Puritan American colonies. All these four areas share a group of historical experiences that are very rare elsewhere: First there was a period of religious fanaticism that in England and in the Netherlands led to revolutions and a civil war. This was followed by several centuries of individual rights and freedoms, toleration, representative political systems, astonishing scientific and technological progress, stunning rise in the standard of living, impressive political success and domestic peace -- the US civil war is the exception to this last rule. The correlation is so strong as to suggest the existence of a causality. At the very least, there is no doubt that for some reason the historical effects of the "Protestant Caliphates" have been very different from those of the real thing. Sent at: 2008 07 04
