The Italians who today have 1.2 kids are the grandchildren of those who had 10 kids. To some degree, stereotyped recollections of the difficulties of large families probably fuel the absurdly small families of today. I think that as these cultural memories fade, a natural desire to reproduce oneself is kicking in--hence the mini-baby boom in France and Sweden.
