The essence of nationalism is considering your own nation superior to others and from this arises the supposed justification for dominating them. Of course, not all nations actively seek to dominate because most, thank God, lack the power to do so. A non-dominant nation may become in practice less nationalistic simply for lack of opportunity to dominate. Or, less frequently, it may turn completely inward and become a hermit kingdom. This seems to be the brand of nationalism favored by at least some American paleos - God forbid that they should ever come in contact with one of those filthy inferior foreigners. Simply loving your own country because it is yours without making any particular claims for it used to be called patriotism. Unhappily the nationalists have largely hijacked that term. Here in Texas your "patriotism" is largely measured by how many "ragheads" you advocate killing. Sent at: 2008 05 15
