In the groups I am thinking of there is propaganda and recruiting (or pre-recruiting) in public or semi-public, but the secret teaching is only given out as the candidate proves himself worthy of it. FB,Meetup, MySpace and so on are good ways for people with unusual affinities to find each other, but would be of very limited use to any group which must conceal its true beliefs and agenda.
