I can assure you that living in present-day Russia is just like living in the United States. There are no KGB spies following people around and no fear of being put to jail for saying something against the government. Most Moscow newspapers are either mildly or strongly critical of Putin and I can assure you that there are more viewpoints than there are in the United States with the hegemony of the Democratic and Republican parties. This Putin-bashing is just an excercise in emitting poisonous venom on a politician who is not so enthusiastic about the escapades of the US government in Yugoslavia and Iraq and doesn't want to make Russia a colony and a source of cheap raw material for the West, but who is extremely open to developing warm relations with Europe and America on an equal status. I should ppoint out that the Western media was much more soft and diplomatic about the Soviet Union - which was a monster state and deserved much more criticism from the Western media than it got.
