Sure, there have been, for a long time, feints at building an American Empire, but it’s a mistake to combine, say, American 19th-century Manifest Destiny and post-Spanish-American War imperialism. Prior to 1848, the continental North America (Canada included) west of the Missouri River had a population of less than 300,000 – including Native Americans, Mexican laborers, post-Revolutionary Spanish landowners, and a handful of trappers and Russian settlers. Far the most populous of all these groups, American Indians were a Stone Age culture just waiting to be bumped off. If Northern Europeans hadn’t displaced them, another group would. A hunter-gatherer people, gently free-holding some of the richest agricultural land on earth, they couldn’t – COULDN’T - last in the age of the steam engine and chemical high explosive.
