Message: Entry: The Death of Music by the Spirit of Government Subsidies Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_death_of_music_from_the_spirit_of_government_subsidies#15297 Post contents: "What about competition? Jazz was really starting to take off in the 30’s and 40’s. Rock and roll followed shortly thereafter. The growth of radio and TV expanded the kinds of music to which people could listen dramatically." I don't think jazz and rock were direct competitors to classical music at that time. Then, even more so than now, appreciation of and exposure to classical music was an indicator of social class and education. My point is that I don't think jazz and rock on the radio siphoned off too many old fuddy-duddies or proletarian Beethoven lovers. Sent at: 2008 07 20
