Message: Entry: The Death of Music by the Spirit of Government Subsidies Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_death_of_music_from_the_spirit_of_government_subsidies#15303 Post contents: Thank you Sid, for pithily making some points I wanted to see made. Just a coupla others: 1. Boulez's remark about Marxism-Leninism (actually I read it in the form "I am 100% Stalinist!") refers not to politics but to his ideological approach to music history. Ditto the comment about blowing up opera houses (he's conducted in more than a few, himself). He has a penchant for making outrageous remarks, which should not be taken seriously. 2. As a listener who's mostly interested in jazz & classical from after the dreaded 1945 cutoff date, I take issue with the claim that modern music clears out concert halls. At most of the modernist concerts I've been too, the hall was full - and what's more, with lots of YOUNG people. This is essential if "classical" (however defined) is to have any future audience.
