Message: Entry: Inventing Islam Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/inventing_islam#15492 Post contents: The big difference between Christianity and other religions and the societies they encompassed was not so much science, but applied technology. Inventions that made the common man's lot easier. The greeks and the romans could make great advances in astronomy, but to the common man it made little difference. But a horse harness that did not strangle the horse and allowed it to pull extra weight made the workload of the peasant lighter, and a water mill freed thousands of the drudgery of handgrinding, or worse, of turning the grinding stone by walking round and round (the Romans, being of practical bent blinded the slaves who did it so that they would not get dizzy). With Christianity science stopped being a toy or a way to dazzle others, and began to become a tool for better living. The Middle Ages were a technological age. Islam, not being Chrisitianity did not develop a culture of technology, and thus could not take true advantage of any advances in science it made. Sent at: 2008 12 02
