The destruction of the various European ethnic identities in the United States as a result of a concerted effort by government to impose an "Americanization" program paved the way for the destruction that occurred after the Immigration Reform Act of 1965. The thin gruel of the American identity that was imposed from above, rather than growing up organically, proved no match for the immigrant groups who have arrived over the past 40 years--groups who still have an organic ethnic identity to cling to.
