Here's the beginning of Chapter 13, "The Concept of Nation," from <i>Memory and Identity</i>: <i>"If we examine the two terms carefully, we discover a close link between the meaning of </i>patria<i> (native land) and nation. In Polish, in fact--but not only in that language--the term </i>na-ród<i> (nation) comes from </i>ród<i> (generation); patria (</i>ojczy-zna<i>), however, has its root in the term father (</i>ojciec<i>).</i>" So, in fact, he did not, when speaking of <i>nation</i>, mean <i>patria</i>, though he regards the terms as related.
