It reads: "However the overthrowing of the social power of religious dogma in the West was a centuries-long battle." He is telling us what is really at the heart of his argument, namely his antagonism toward "religious dogma" (read: the Catholic Church). It is helpful to keep that in mind while reading what he has to say. It is that antagonism which is preventing him, despite his credentials, from looking deeper into these matters.
