Potlatches did not typically end with burning the collected goods, but with giving them as gifts. The purpose was not only to demonstrate the wealth of the chieftain, but also to cement various dependency and hierarchical relationships. Besides physical goods, and more important to the participants, were the social and community goods given. In many tribes, a person had no official name until one was given at a potlatch. By accepting the name given, one accepted a debt of obligation to the chieftain who gave it. The same was true with ranks and offices, also given at potlatch. Sent at: 2008 07 05
