Entry: The Death of American Empire Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_death_of_american_empire#1724 Post contents: I've some minor quibbles with Mr. Foy's argument about American responsibility for both world wars (there's no denying that Austro-Hungarian imperialism ignited the first, nor that Hitler sought to achieve his goals through war as well), but the main point of the article is factually accurate: the United State has been an empire for over a century, thanks to the messianic Yankee Puritanism that triumphed in 1865 (see Acton's letter to Lee about the cause lost at Appomatox to understand this fully). The question now is whether it can recover from it (assuming there's any will to do so) and how. When it comes to that, I'm a pessimist. Sent at: 2008 05 11
