Message: Entry: Kosovo, Russia, and the Last Grasps of American Unipolarity Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/kosovo_and_the_last_grasps_of_american_unipolarity#18018 Post contents: The US policy toward Yugoslavia ---the unipolarism you tlak about--- destroying a relatively successful socialist state, and opening it up to foreign--meaning Wall Street---investment. Most current US foreign policy is about propping up international finance capitalism, which the American elite thinks is important because the US dollar is reserve currency of the system. The US dollar MUST continue to be the world's reserve currency if the US is to continue to be able to finance it's trade and budget deficits. The main reason for US economic properity is the relative value of the US dollar (the eptro-dollar) to other currencies. If the dollar falls, all of the "benefits" of globalization and outsourcing will evaporate, and all the computers and othe consumer goods that prop up the US prosperity will increase in cost to the US conusmer. Another problem with globalization--the "libertarian" dream of a "New World Order " without borders or barriers to "free trade" is that the US public is vulnerabel to to changes in the exchange rate, and without manufacturing base or even decent engineering or manufacturing expertise and technology, the US will face a huge decrease in the standard of living.
