Message: Entry: Kosovo, Russia, and the Last Grasps of American Unipolarity Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/kosovo_and_the_last_grasps_of_american_unipolarity#18038 Post contents: Michael Warning, Actually, to be clear on this, conservatives are the ones who typically say that "we're a republic, not a democracy", rule of law being more important than votes. Conservatives talk about 'freedom' as sacrosanct more than they talk about democracy. You may have a gripe about how this squares with their view of international law regarding the invasion of Iraq, but conservatives feel that Iraq violated cease fire treaties, which made action against Iraq legitimate, and that US sovereignty is not bound to the UN. At any rate, we shouldn't confuse the issue, what conservatives believe about law and democracy isn't the issue. Part of the issue is that over the past decades, and this has accelerated recently, Kosovar Albanians, through the KLA, have been pushing Serbs out of Kosovo, killing them, harassing them, and destroying historic sites. The West, rather than seeing problems on all sides, chose to make Serbia the only culprit, and while acting against the Serbs, did not use any force or persuasion to stop crimes by other parties against Serbs. The West has also routinely rejected Serb proposals of compromise. Sent at: 2008 07 24
