On the foundational issues that make conservatism even possible -- cultural stability, limited government, local control, immigration -- Buckley was unengaged (or worse). Look where we are today? It's telling that fellow Yalie Zmirak decries the "populism" of NR (by which he actually means non-Catholicism, ie Jewishness). Conservatism requires populism.
