The truly interesting thing about the men of July 20 was the fact that virtually all of them would have been executed as reactionary elements by the the Soviets after the "liberation" of Germany, or entombed in one of the NS camps like Buchenwald that were kept running in "the Zone" for quite some time after the war. These camps were filled by representatives of a broad cross section of non-communist German political life, and were in fact rather "light" on representatives of the recently deposed Hitler regime. Not only German aristocrats, who are naturally accursed in the instinctively bolshevistic thought patterns held by many modern Americans (even self-styled "conservatives"), but also German Social Democrats and Liberals fared badly under Soviet rule. It should be remembered that the Social Democrats Julius Leber and Adolf Reichwein were betrayed to the Gestapo by communists who they had brought into the plot out of a misguided sense of inclusiveness. The Nazis' mass roundup of army officers, churchmen, civil servants and diplomats (with many aristocrats represented in each of these categories) following July 20 was useful to the Soviets and the Western Allies in that the natural leadership caste of German society was being routed out by the NS regime itself. This accorded with the "United Nations'" goal of totally destroying German society to facilitate the postwar remaking of it in their image (assuming that Morganthauism, which called for "ending" the German state, or Kaufmanism, which called for "ending" the Germans as and ethnicity, did not prevail). The neocons press's freely expressed hatred of all Germans shows that the spirit of Ilya Ehrenburg is alive and well on the American so-called "Right." Sent at: 2008 11 22
