Neocons realize that it is important to “capture” leaders of the conservative crowd or people who can be made to look like “conservative” leaders. The lesson is that Neocons play dirty, and thus those who would oppose them should expect such dirty tactics from them and in turn should not be overly concerned with the tactics employed against Neocons. The other lesson is that Buckley was a genuinely talented (and well trained) man, which of course can cause even greater regret over what he failed to accomplish. But it should also tell us that WFB thought he was doing what was possible under the present circumstances. One final observation would be that as the forces of the Neocons and Left wing Political Correctness grew in power, WFB’s columns became ever more indirect in the manner of one who was writing under a nearly totalitarian system.
