I find it harder to reconcile the image of the graceful and brilliant writer with that of the ruthless ideological operative (as alleged by his many critics). The man who, according to his former teacher Willmoore Kendall, "devoured" people, rarely shows up in the pages of his vast oeuvre. Now that WFB has passed into eternity, the likely emergence of an apocryphal and mytologizing literature shall interfere with the need to comprehend precisely where the man ended and the image began.
