Message: Entry: In Darkest New England Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/in_darkest_new_england#1945 Post contents: From a reading of the book Albion's Seed by David Hackett Fischer, I'd imagine that the weirdness of New England probably comes from the Scotch-Irish ("rednecks") who settled the backcountry, rather than the Germanic Puritans who remain icily Brahmin in Boston. Nobody really likes them, anyway. Also, as far as the famous boarding schools go, I remember reading in old Society books by David Birmingham that St. Paul's was favored by the Philadelphia Quakers-cum-Episcopalians, while Groton and Harvard were exclusively the province of blue blooded Brahmins. So you've got some slightly distinct ethnic heritages going on here. Sent at: 2008 11 23
