Two previous popes -- Pius X and Benedict XV -- saw no reason to condemn the AF. Then Pius XII rescinded the condemnation a decade later. It seems that the condemnation may have been instigated by liberal French bishops, who used it to purge conservative elements, especially in the seminaries. Marcel Lefebvre, who was a seminarian at the time and later founded the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), considered the condemnation to be a mistake. Sent at: 2008 11 23
