The issues of poverty, "racism", unaccountable government, etc. didn't go away. Nevertheless, the movement vanished overnight with the end of the Vietnam War. War is a special case because you can't co-opt an anti-war movement with token gestures and half-measures. On "when are we ever going to withdraw from Iraq", etc.: I think there will be less overt US intervention for a while, after American fighting in Iraq is over (and it will end, a few years after it's perceived as unwinnable). Americans won't support further actions the way they supported the invasion of Iraq. At the risk of pushing the analogy way too far, you might even call it a Vietnam syndrome. Sent at: 2008 05 15
