Evan Bayh (D.-Ind.) just tried to nail down Petreaus on how long it will be before U.S. troops can begin leaving Iraq. Petraeus's response was that would happen "when the conditions allow you to do that." That reminded me of Justice Potter Stewart's famous remark about pornography--that is, he couldn't define it but knew it when he saw it.
