Kakutani slammed the novelist Martin Amis' new book on Islamic terrorism and the attacks on 9/11. Moreover, she rebuked Mr. Amis for relying on neocon ideology regarding the Middle East. She was critical of Bernard Lewis and Christopher Hitchens. And Kakutani approvingly quotes the former CIA official and neocon critic Michael Scheuer, " Osama Bin Laden's declaration of war is a reaction to specific U.S. foreign policies like support for Israel and an American presence in the Middle East."
