I would offer that it is because Reagan was an American patriot in, Willmoore Kendall's phrase, "his hips." Buchanan shares this same proclivity to believe in an America of prior hopes and promise. It was inconceivable for Reagan to have been anything but a profound lover of his country, and Buchanan's deepest motives spring from the same well.
