Message: Entry: The Real Bastille Day Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_real_bastille_day#2388 Post contents: Mr. Meng comments that both the American and French revolutions were "in essence... anti-Catholic and brought about the secular state." There is no doubt that the French revolution was anti-Catholic. But the American? It was fought against an officially Protestant power that until 1829 denied Roman Catholics the franchise, the right to be elected to public office, or to hold military or naval commissions; and until 1858 required anyone matriculating at its public universities to swear adherence to the Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England. Pray tell us, Mr. Meng, how was the American revolution, as a result of which Roman Catholics were relieved of all these disabilities imposed by English law, "anti-Catholic"? Sent at: 2008 09 07
