A republic should be influenced by powerful special interest groups, however, this influence is supposed to be objectively criticized by the media. If media fails to perform its duty, government becomes a tool of the few. It is for this reason that consolidation of media outlets is more offensive than consolidation of other industries such as oil, telephone, steel, etc. It amazes me that the Newscorp purchase of WSJ was allowed by the same government that worries when MSFT decides to make their web browser a desktop browser.
