Fair enough, but then you also say, "...there is not a proliferation of hate groups, just an ever expanding definition of 'hate' the SPLC uses to include perfectly mainstream conservatives and opponents of illegal immigration, most recently the Federation for American Immigration Reform." But that's how it works, by attacking the really fringe groups who receive no aid, the next ones on the margin are set up for attack and they will receive no aid. It's a constricting circle and cannot be stopped. When you define the outer limits of acceptable discourse, you will find your limits reduced similarly...and soon.
