Message: Entry: The Real Bastille Day Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_real_bastille_day#2391 Post contents: In response to M.S.S.'s request: Besides the fact that Catholics were marginalized and discriminated against during the Colonial Period of our history, the real reason there was an American revolution was due to the Quebec Act of June, 1774. The English historian Cardinal Aidan Gasquet declared that "The American Revolution was not a movement for civil and religious liberty; its principal cause was the bigoted rage of the American Puritan and Presbyterian ministers at the concession of full religious liberty and equality to Catholics of French Canada." Also, you might want to reference the Suffolk County Resolves of September 1774. In fact, the very first offensive conducted by the Americans was an invasion against Quebec in 1775 under Benedict Arnold (wounded) and Richard Montgomery (KIA). But it was beaten back by the governor, Guy Carleton. Also, it is a fact that none of the leaders of the American Revolution were friendly to Catholics, except to the three compromisers of the Faith, the Carroll brothers. The spirit that animated the leaders was a combination of Protestantism and freemasonry--neither of which have been or are favorable to Catholicism. Sent at: 2008 09 07
