Message: Entry: The Kirk Wars Continue Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_kirk_wars_continue#2432 Post contents: Wolfe is illiterate. He referred at one pointin his rejoinder to "the irrepressive Taki..." Irrepressible Taki is, to be sure - and thank God! But is "irrepressive" even a word? John Randolph of Roanoke poses a difficult problem for defenders of the virtuous North/evil South view of slavery. Randolph inherited all his slaves, and did not buy or sell them, as documented in the chapter of his biography of Randolph entitled "The Cancer" mentioned above. Moreover, Randolph manumitted his slaves at his death, and his will provided funds to buy land for them in Ohio, so that they might live in self-sufficiency on the fruits of their own labors. The white inhabitants of that free state drove the black beneficiaries of Randolph's legacy from their farms and razed them to the ground. So much for Northern tolerance! All this Wolfe would have known, had he actually bothered to read Kirk's book. Sent at: 2008 07 04
