Message: Entry: What's Going Right in Europe--How Localism Might Save the Continent Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/whats_going_right_in_europe_how_localism_might_save_the_continent#24679 Post contents: To Charles: There were indeed anti-Christian thinkers in one Enlightenment tradition--the 18th century French version. The Anglo-American Enlightenment, however, was not particularly irreligious, favoring a secular state as long as Christian society survived. This Enlightenment tradition worked reasonably well in providing freedom and middle-class prosperity until the late 20th century, when the secular state turned "secularist," which is about as toxic as religion turning fundamentalist. I also remain unconvinced that restoring monarchies (Carlist or other) will solve our problems. There aren't many of these monarchists left, after all. Besides, the great monarchies of Europe blundered their way into WW One, which helped to contribute to the most murderous secularisms. Sent at: 2008 07 24
