Look at the following paragraphs, especially this: "The Southerner is faced with a paradox: He must use an instrument, which is political, and so unrealistic and pretentious that he cannot believe in it, to re-establish a private, self-contained, and essentially spiritual life." He seems to be talking about the opposite of your interpretation. In any case, the above sentence represents the paradox that I was talking about.
