The Democratic Party was pro-expansion, including its Southern wing, which hoped to open up new areas to spread slavery. Lincoln was a qualified egalitarian, disbelieving in social equality but believing that a man had the right to keep what the sweat of his brow earned (his opponents believed that only white men had such a right).
