Lincoln got himself in political hot water by opposing the Mexican War that led to the Mexican Cession. He and others feared it was an attempt by the "Slave Power" to spread slavery. He was only partially correct - the slave states would have been pleased to extend slavery to the Cession territories but Pres. Polk preferred to buy them from Mexico.
