During slavery days, they were secessionist. In post-slavery days they became patriots again. During Jim Crow times, they were hard-shell Democrats. With the abolition of Jim Crow, they became Republicans. The only lodestar in their political universe seems to be war - if we're in it, they are for it (Gen. MacArthur's wife Jean commented of her fellow Southerners that they didn't ask what a war was about, only where it was so they could get to it as soon as possible!). Sent at: 2008 09 06
