Why not argue that we should have helped Germany defeat the Russian Empire in WWI so as to prevent the Cold War, or that we help France defeat Germany in 1871 so as to prevent Nazism .. but then, of course, this would scuttle the whole Germany defeats Russia idea, so perhaps..
