Message: Entry: The Truth About the "Good War" Link: http://www.takimag.com/site/article/the_truth_about_the_good_war#25868 Post contents: The Allies did many harsh, cruel, and sometimes dishonorable things in WWII. But there is a world of difference between instrumental violence designed to win wars and violence and mass murder as an end in itself. The Nazis diverted war materiel to mass murder Jews; they killed Ukranians en masse, even though they were initially greeted as liberators by this unfortunate people who were kept under Stalin's thumb during the 1930s. Jews were expelled from Germany and murdered (as well as being murdered even on the eve of the end of the war in Hungary just for the hell of it) before, during, after, close to, and far away from allied bombing. I don't believe in carpet bombing civilians, but the idea that errant bombs, even lots of them, lost in the bombing of military armament factories is even in the same league as Auschwitz and the mass murder of civilians in the East is a false equivalence. The Dresden bombing was a unique change in strategy and an unfortunate and unnecessary one. We should look at and consider our failings as a people, but let's not forget we were bombed at Pearl Harbor and Germany declared war against us one week later. These bastard extremists started the wheel in motion, not America, which was still sensibly in check by the intelligent sentiments of the America First movement until Dec. 7 1941. Sent at: 2008 07 04
